Classroom Management Strategies:
I believe that every child has the ability to succeed and attend college. My
classroom management Skills focuses on the most important aspect of teaching
the curriculum. Good classroom management means that ALL students are
learning, are “on task,” are behaving in a cooperative way so that individual and
class learning goals can be achieved. To reach students with different learning
styles, aptitudes, and interests, teachers must vary their curriculum and
instructional methods on a daily basis. What goes on in a classroom will vary
from minute to minute, from day to day. But all instruction should occur in an
environment of order, respect, and cooperation. And that requires good
classroom management.
There are four elements that provide a solid foundation for good classroom
management. Building relationships, effective rules and procedure, effective
curriculum development and instructional methods, effective ways to reduce
stress and prepare for optimal learning. It is most important to establish
classroom procedures the first weeks of school. Most discipline problems arise
when procedures are not in place. Every classroom should have very few rules
but with the best management. Once students enter my classroom, they will
follow a routine until they are dismissed from class. Students will have warm-up
rights when the starting bell rings. Work at the beginning of the class goes by
many names, do now, starters, bell ringers, etc. Student engagement strategies
keep students on task. Having lessons that students actually want to learn will be
the main tool for keeping students on task. Formative assessment, this will get
your students to say or do something with the information you just gave them. A
safe classroom environment has many different aspects that work in conjunction
with each other. These include classroom rules, consequences, procedures,
respect, your attire, and a tidy room.
Collaborative Learning is beneficial to having students work together. It lets the
student become the teacher. Working together lets students get their questions
answered by someone who is not going to grade them. It lets students talk and
get to know each other during class. Working in groups lets high school and
middle school students rely on each other when they have to do something that is
challenging. Curriculum is the most important aspect of any class. Lessons that
integrate various learning styles, while capturing student interest, have the
greatest impact on learning. This integration is the most important factor when
differentiating between a mediocre teacher and a great one. Lesson plans that
incorporate different learning styles, as well as student interest, which, at the
same time meet State Standards. Technology education is important for all
students. The stimulating labs and activities that Technology Education has to
offer can reinvigorate many at-risk students who find lectures and bookwork
boring. Procedures are the heart of my classroom. I will have a classroom that
runs efficiently. My procedures are simple and well defined and will instruct
students on expectations and behavior in my classroom. My management plan
gives a clear understanding of my expectation and goal for the school year. The
rules and procedures that will be taught to my students at the beginning of the
school year are procedures for everything they do in the classroom that requires
structure. How to Put away supplies, turning in assignments, getting ready for
lunch, entering the classroom, exiting the classroom, etc. After I have taught my
students the procedures and expectations of the daily schedule, activities will run
smoothly. Clarity about classroom routines and expectations encourages and
enhances the participation of students in the classroom. I have planned these
procedures in advance in explicit detail. Rules and Procedures take time to
teach. This requires time and role-playing during the first weeks of school.
Once students learn and understand the rules and procedure that have been
taught, they will know what proper behavior action is and is not. I will not have
to stop instructions in order to handle procedural concerns. There will be a copy
of my rules and procedures on the board in my classroom for students to read. If
students are not sure what to do at any given time they can refer to the copy on
the board.
